PRIDE GET BACK ON TRACK, AS RAIN STALLS SCORPIONS, HURRICANES

Carter, Moseley lead Pride to third straight victory; Blackwood slams hundred before rain forces no-result

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Half-centuries from Jonathan Carter and Shayne Moseley propelled Barbados Pride to a four-wicket victory over the United States and moved them back into semi-final contention in the WINDIES Super50 Cup on Tuesday here.

Carter and fellow left-hander Moseley both scored 60 at better than a run-a-ball to lead a successful run chase that earned the Pride five points and got their bid for a semi-final place back on course, as they moved level on points with joint-hosts Combined Campuses & Colleges Marooners in Group “B”.

In the other Group “B” contest: Jermaine Blackwood hit his second WINDIES Super50 career hundred for Jamaica Scorpions before rain allowed just five balls in the Leeward Islands Hurricanes chase, forcing a no-result.

At the Three Ws Oval: Chasing 213 for victory, Pride overcame a few hiccups to reach their target in the 36th over to earn a bonus point.

Moseley dominated a 76-run, opening stand with Kevin Stoute that set the Pride on their way before Carter and Pride captain Shamarh Brooks shared 80 for the third wicket to keep the chase on course.

In pursuit of the bonus point, Pride stumbled when they lost Carter, Brooks, Tevyn Walcott and Justin Greaves in the space of 34 balls, but they overcame this shaky period to hit their target.

United States had earlier rallied to 212 for eight off their 50 overs, after they were sent in to bat, on the back of opener Monank Patel’s 80 from 103 balls and 40 off 69 balls from Alex Amsterdam.

Left-arm fast bowler Dominic Drakes, son of former Barbados and WINDIES all-rounder Vasbert Drakes, claimed 4-44 from 10 overs to lead the Pride attack and veteran left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn grabbed 2-27 from 10 overs.

At Kensington Oval: Blackwood cracked eight fours and two sixes in an even 100 from 113 balls to lead a strong Scorpions batting performance and catapult them to 299 for six from their allocation of 50 overs.

He shared 116 for the second wicket with left-handed opener John Campbell and followed up with a 92-run stand for the third wicket with Andre McCarthy.

Campbell made 61 from 63 balls with nine fours before he was caught at deep mid-off in the 21st over, and McCarthy got 42 from 61 balls before he and Blackwood were dismissed in the space of seven balls to leave the Scorpions 223 for four in the 41st over.

But an enterprising 44 off 23 balls from Brandon King in a 61-run stand for the fifth-wicket with Nkrumah Bonner helped the group leaders raised 83 from the last 10 overs.

Hurricanes were no runs for no wickets from five balls when rain stopped play.

Players and umpires returned to the field about 45 minutes later for a resumption, but before Derval Green could bowl the one ball to complete the first over, another torrent of rain forced them off again and led to the inevitable.
