Jamaican Range Officers to officiate in Latin American Handgun Championships

Kingston, Jamaica – October 4, 2019: Top local practical shooting match officials, Keith Miller and Christopher Nunez have been chosen to officiate at the prestigious Latin American Handgun Championships scheduled for October 9 – 13, 2019 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The senior range officers were selected from a pool of close to 1000 eligible officials to guide the proceedings at the level four tournament, the second highest class of competition under the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC).

The Jamaicans will work alongside more than 100 other members of the International Range Officers Association (IROA) who will marshal the 300 shooters contesting the popular regional championship. Their selection continues the tradition of local involvement in high level shooting competitions as Jamaicans have officiated at a number of renowned events including the 2017 Handgun World Shoot in Châteauroux, France.

Miller, who currently serves as President of the National Range Officers Institute, Jamaica, (NROI Jamaica) said he is looking forward to the competition. Having presided over matches in the United States, Jamaica and other Caribbean Countries, the seasoned official is eager to direct the continental championships.

“The Latin American Championships is just one stage below the highest level of competition so we will have some of the best shooters in the world competing,” he explained.

“The courses should pose significant challenges to the competitors and it’s going to test their problem-solving and shooting skills as well as our officiating experience and I am really looking forward to it,” he added.

Conversely, this will be the first overseas competition for Nunez who is keen to add to his credentials with an international outing.

“This is one of the biggest shooting competitions in South America and for two Jamaicans to be chosen over more than 1000 other officials is significant and I am honoured and delighted to be representing my country on such a big stage,” he said.

NROI Jamaica was established by the Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) in 2011 to train and certify range officers to officiate practical shooting competitions. The organisation currently has more than 130 members.
