G2K President Stephen Edwards not seeking re-election
Kingston, Jamaica: Mr. Stephen Edwards, President of Generation 2000 (G2K), has indicated that he will not seek re-election in November.
Mr. Edwards officially joined the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) immediately after the General Elections in 2011. During his eight (8) years of unbroken and faithful service to the organization he served in many roles, including Policy Committee Chairman, Deputy General Secretary, Vice President and three (3) years as President.
During Mr. Edwards’ tenure as G2K President the organization accomplished many things, which include, but are not limited to:
1. Comprehensive constitutional reform;
2. Launch of the Kingston and St. Andrew Chapter;
3. Revived the Manchester and Portland Chapters;
4. Launched the Trelawny Steering Committee;
5. Launched the Massachusetts Steering Committee;
6. G2K Gained membership to the Caribbean Young Democratic Union (CYDU);
7. The organization’s newsletter ‘The Bell Tower’ was revived;
8. Organized numerous outreach activities such as: Replacing pit latrines at basic schools with modern sanitary conveniences, Painting of Children’s Homes, Contributions to fire victims, feeding the homeless, Beach clean-ups, 5-K Runs, Tree Planting Exercises, financial support for tertiary students, etc);
9. Gave hundreds of young persons opportunities to participate in International Educational Seminars;
10. Secured gainful employment for scores of young persons;
11. Created a staple fundraising events;
12. G2K played pivotal roles in the campaigns for the South East St. Mary, North West St. Andrew and Eastern Portland by-election wins;
13. G2K returned to its solution-driven policy roots with the staging of the Water/Climate Change Forum
Mr. Edwards stated, “G2K has afforded me invaluable experiences that have transformed me into a better leader and professional. No other political youth movement gives young Jamaican professionals the ability to influence their own futures in a real way like G2K does. It is therefore without any hesitation or equivocation that I will continue to encourage the youth of the nation to join the Generation 2000 movement”
Mr. Edwards further stated, “I thank the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, the entire leadership of the JLP and the members of G2K, for their trust and support during my tenure. My belief, that the Jamaica Labour Party is the best vehicle to advance Jamaica as a nation, remains strong and resolute. May God continue to the Jamaica Labour Party and Generation 2000 continued success.
Nominations for the positions of President and Vice Presidents will open on Monday October 28, 2019.
