CONSTABLE DAVIAN MARTIN WINS TOP COP AWARD
KINGSTON, JAMAICA: Constable Davian Martin was announced the winner of the LASCO/Jamaica Constabulary Force 2018/19 Police Officer of the Year at the annual luncheon at the Jamaica Pegasus on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.
Originally from Burnt Savannah Westmoreland, the 26-year-old Constable Martin has been on the force for seven years and is a member of the Mandeville division’s operational support team.
A strong community and youth advocate, Constable Martin is the leader of the Mandeville Police Youth Club, which saw the membership boosted from 30 to over 80 under his stewardship. Utilising his platform, he organised a 5k run/walk, which donated funds to the Mandeville and Percy Junor hospitals, as well as initiated annual Feed The Street People programmes. Through his work, he has already been awarded for outstanding contribution to Community Policing.
Sharing the honours at the ceremony were first runner-up Sergeant Florezel Thompson and second runner-up Constable Noel Chang.
As LASCO/JCF Top Cop, Constable Martin took home the trophy along with a $350,000 cash prize. Sergeant Thompson, who serves within the Motorised Patrol Division, was awarded $250,000, while Constable Chang of the Mobile Reserve received $100,000.
Founder and Executive Chairman, LASCO Affiliated Companies, Hon. Lascelles Chin, in his address to attendees said the increase in the prize monies represent the value of the service men and women to the group.
“For 18 years, LASCO has been committed to making the men and women of the force know that LASCO values their service and protection. Our public service professionals — teachers, principals, nurses, and police officers — are the backbone of our democracy and way of life. They are at the core of all we do and they keep the wheels of a society in balance,” said Hon. Chin.
The Police of the Year Awards Programme was initiated in 2000 through a partnership between LASCO and the JCF to publicly acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of the members of the force. Nine officers — eight men and one woman vied for the title of LASCO/JCF 2018/19 Police Officer of the Year, this year.
Constable Martin now joins a band of elite officers who proudly wear the badge of Police Officer of the Year and will embark on his year of programmes supported by LASCO.
