PHILLIPS LAUD GENE PEARSON FOLLOWING HIS DEATH

Leader of the Opposition and People's National Party president Dr Peter Phillips is saddened by the death of well-acclaimed Jamaican artist Gene Pearson. Pearson, who died on Thursday last, was one of the most gifted and talented artists in sculpture and ceramics. “His particular strength was his remarkable ability to utilise traditional artforms and provide modern relevance and interpretation. He was a gifted interpreter of the beauty and rhythms of Jamaicans and Jamaica.” Dr Phillips said. He added that Pearson was not only talented and exceptionally creative, he was easy going and accessible and gave freely of his insights and skills to all who sought him out. “He worked for years sharing his skills and talent at Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts. He was not one who sought reward, he cared only that the talent was being passed down as he had learnt from the giants before him. Jamaica has truly lost a giant. Pearson lives on through his inspiring art, skill and talent, which he has embedded in younger generations of artists.” Dr Phillips, on behalf of the entire PNP family, expresses condolences to the late artist's family, friend and colleagues.
